Welcome to the So you want to be a councillor? candidate training course for the 2020 local government elections.

The Queensland Government values the contribution that diversity brings to our community and encourages anyone who wants to participate in making decisions and delivering services for the benefit of their community to stand for local government.

The course has 3 modules and will take about 1 hour to complete.

  • Module 1 gives an overview of your obligations as a candidate.
  • Module 2 gives an overview of your obligations as a councillor, if elected.
  • Module 3 is a resource library with links to a range of information about the topics in the training.

Once you have completed the training you will be emailed a certificate. Please keep your certificate if you are considering nominating as a candidate for the 2020 local government elections.

Some tips for navigating the course and training portal

  • Click on the Queensland Government logo located in the top left of the screen to return to the portal.
  • Download the course from the resources tab in the training portal. You will need to create an account prior to downloading the course.
  • Don’t forget to scroll if you are using a smaller screen.
  • Keep your certificate just in case you need it to nominate.

Please note that some councils’ policies may prohibit access to content hosted on another platform, such as YouTube. Please contact your council’s IT team for further advice should you receive an error message when trying to play the videos or animations during the course.

Please note that the training is optimised for use on the internet browsers Google Chrome or Firefox. These internet browsers can be downloaded for free.
