The Central Queensland region is experiencing rapid economic and investment growth as a result of record levels on investment from the resources sector. In 2011-12, around 75 million tonnes of coal was produced in the region accounting for 40 per cent of Queensland's total coal production. Agricultural production continues to grow strongly in Central Queensland accounting for almost 10 per cent of total agricultural production in the state. As a result, Central Queensland is currently one of the most prosperous regions in the state and has a strong economic outlook.
The Central Queensland region includes the five local government areas of:
- Banana Shire Council
- Central Highlands Regional Council
- Gladstone Regional Council
- Livingstone Shire Council
- Rockhampton Regional Council
- Woorabinda Aboriginal Shire Council.

The Central Queensland Regional Plan ( 6.8 MB) has been prepared with a strong focus on resolving land use competition between the agricultural and the resource sectors and driving economic development.
The policies contained in the regional plan will contribute towards the protection of strategic areas of priority agricultural land use from potentially incompatible resource activities and maximise opportunities for co-existence of resources and agricultural land use.
The regional plan also safeguards areas required for the growth of towns in the regions through the establishment of Priority Living Areas while providing for resource activities to locate within these areas where it meets communities' expectations as determined by the relevant local government.
Maps of the Priority Agricultural Areas and Priority Living Areas by local government for the Central Queensland region are available online.
Areas of regional interest mapped in the Central Queensland Regional Plan include priority agricultural areas and priority living areas.
